Tips for Maintaining Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage Disposals A garbage disposal can come in handy if you spend a lot of time cooking in your kitchen. However, if you use your garbage disposal on a regular basis, there are some things you will need to do in order to maintain it. By taking the right steps, you can keep your garbage disposal up and running for years to come. Here are some tips that will help you maintain your garbage disposal.

Run your garbage disposal at least once every few days.

You might not always need to use your garbage disposal. But every few days, you should, at the very least, turn it on and let some water circulate through it. If you don’t run it, some of the parts in it can begin to corrode or get rusty. You might also start to notice odors coming from it as a result of food begin stuck to the various parts of it. So run it on occasion, even if you aren’t necessarily using it.

Cut everything you put into your garbage disposal into small pieces.

While your garbage disposal is designed to handle almost anything you throw at it, larger chunks of food can put it to the test and lead to problems. So rather than simply shoving things down the drain, try and cut things up into smaller pieces before running them through your garbage disposal.

Put citrusy fruits into your garbage disposal every now and then.

For the most part, you can keep your garbage disposal clean by running soap and cold water down it. But once a week or so, you should toss an orange or lemon peel into your disposal. It will help to clear away food particles and keep your disposal smelling as fresh as possible.
